Fairness, Responsibility and Welfare

Fairness, Responsibility and Welfare - This book emerges from a long story of collaborations and interactions and I am afraid I have lost track of all the direct and indirect help I am indebted for. First, I would like to thank the coauthors of the papers which have provided a good part of the material of this book, Walter Bossert, Dirk Van de gaer, and especially Frangois Maniquet who collaborated on a handbook chapter on compensation and responsibility which formed an early backbone of, and an inducement into, this text. I thank him for his encouragements to develop this project.
John Roemer initially attracted me to this topic during a visit at U.C. Davis, and has always been a great source of inspiration. His comments on this project have been very encouraging. The first chapters were written while I was on sabbatical leave at Nuffield College, Oxford, and I am very grateful to Tony Atkinson and Kevin Roberts for their kind hospitality. During this period, a reading group on hypothetical insurance provided an excellent challenge to understand the attraction of Dworkin's theory, and Chapter 6 has been profoundly influenced by the discussions in this group, in particular with Paula Casal, Tom Christiano, Matthew Clayton, Jerry Cohen and Andrew Williams. At the last stages of preparation of the manuscript, a Lachmann Fellowship at the LSE provided not only an excellent environment to focus on the last chapters, but also the opportunity to benefit from a doctoral seminar on the manuscript, and I am very grateful to the attendants for their comments and their patience with the obscurities of the text. A lecture series at the Norwegian School of Economics provided the last round of valuable comments and I am very grateful to Alexander Cappelen and Bertil Tungodden for their kind invitation, and to the attendants for their reactions. I am also grateful to my colleagues at the University of Pau and at CERSES for their support.
